The Newness of Life

May 4, 2020 by Nick & Cindy Davis

Spring, which represents the vibrancy and newness of life – has been put on hold across the country due to shelter in place and social distancing policies. Being able to get out and about, get together with friends and family, and going out to “do something” has been essentially having the pause button pressed.

As a result, many people feel stagnant, bored, and under-stimulated which can lead to depression and irritability. These feelings, coupled with the underlying anxiety and uncertainty most of us are also experiencing, can lead to a cycle of lethargy and agitation. The solution is simple (intellectually, at least): pursue “newness.” Do something different, or even a familiar activity but in a new way.

The Newness of Life

The Newness of Life

People are pursuing new passions, and learning things they’ve put off learning—sometimes for years. New languages, studying ancestry, reading books, getting new designations and degrees.  In these activities, many have found renewed energy and excitement.

This week, perhaps stop and reflect for a minute about what we could do that would bring some newness into our lives – even while many are still sheltering in place.

Something to Think About

This is the perfect time to start a new hobby or to resume a hobby from many years ago that you have not had time for. It is also the perfect time to reach out to those in your life, from family and friends to past clients – even if it is one note per day, it could be a light for someone during this challenging time.

Weekly Activity

Savvy agents are taking this time to pursue new designations through online courses and taking advantage of the many free and discounted offering available through NAR and the state and local associations. They’re also diving into learning the necessary technology skills to be able to offer virtual options for their clients. What can you pursue that will add credentials, credibility, and connectivity with your sphere and farm at this time? The choices are endless!

Words of Wisdom

Step through new doors. The majority of the time there’s something fantastic on the other side. – Oprah Winfrey

You never know what you can do until you try, and very few try unless they have to. – C. S. Lewis

Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Everyone has a ‘risk muscle.’ You keep it in shape by trying new things. If you don’t, it atrophies. Make a point of using it at least once a day.  –Roger von Oech

Don’t let fear or insecurity stop you from trying new things. Believe in yourself. Do what you love. And most importantly, be kind to others, even if you don’t like them. – Stacy London
