Researching Countertop Material Choices

May 29, 2019 by Nick & Cindy Davis

Home Renovating a home may add a lot of value, however the materials you select can ultimately impact the return on your investment. When you are considering what material to use for your countertop, take particular notice at the pros and cons of some of the more popular options: granite, quartz, laminate and marble.

Researching Countertop Material Choices

Granite is a well-liked natural stone that looks beautiful in kitchens and bathrooms. It happens to be resistant to heat and scratches and can last a lifetime when taken care of properly. One of the cons of granite is that it is going to have seams, particularly in U-shaped or L-shaped layouts. In order to avoid moisture or stains from seeping into the stone, you will need to seal it regularly. Granite also doesn’t have as wide a selection of color or design options as man-made materials, simply because it occurs naturally.

Quartz is an additional popular stone that comes in an array of colors and styles. It will not crack or chip as easily as natural stones, and it’s non-porous, therefore it won’t harbor bacteria. It stands up well against stains and is simple to keep clean. Quartz is more expensive than other alternatives, however it can add a modern flair to your kitchen. The seams are noticeable, which is a con to some. Also, it isn’t resistant to heat, so a hot pan could damage it.

Laminate is regarded as the most cost-effective available choices. However, it is produced from layers of material glued together, so it isn’t resistant to heat or scratches. Laminate countertops don’t add as much resale value to a home, because the material is cheap and widely available.

Marble could be a wise decision in a high-end home. You’ll want to note that marble is a high-maintenance and porous stone, so potential buyers probably won’t like it. Stains can seep deep into the stone, so professional sealing is essential and is often needed every 6-12 months. It is also softer than other stones, meaning scratches show up often. Marble is unquestionably beautiful, however it is expensive and harder to care for than other available options.
