Data released last Friday by the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) finds that Hurricane Matthew damage to property claims have gone up but fewer new claims are coming in.
Statewide, the report finds 78,963 insurance claims for residential homes and 3,143 for commercial buildings, though total numbers include other categories, such as mobile homeowners (5,397) and commercial residential (333).
On Oct. 12, OIR reported $218 million in claims; by Oct. 14, the number swelled to $454 million. The most recent update was published on Oct. 21.
Of the 91,212 claims filed, 25.7 % have reportedly been closed, and even while 10,859 of those were paid, 12,537 of those claims were closed without compensation for owners.
Statewide, only three counties – Holmes, Lafayette and Liberty – submitted no insurance claims for Hurricane Matthew damage, though many counties only had single-digit claims. Volusia County had the most claims with 26,664, and then Duval, Brevard, St Johns and Flagler.
