TVs under $500 that differentiate themselves from all others

August 31, 2016 by Nick & Cindy Davis

TVs are a pretty major purchase. Unlike smartphones, which most people upgrade every a couple of years, or computers, where lots of people upgrade every five to six, a TV can easily last a decade.

They’re undoubtedly the largest screens in the house, and they get used for a lot of different tasks, whether it be displaying regular broadcast TV or playing video games.

But that doesn’t suggest you have to spend a fortune on one.

You actually can, however, there are several good TVs available that cost 1/6 the cost of that $3,000 LG model. There isn’t any doubt that they won’t be as good, but if you’re a true videophile, no budget TV will probably make you happy.

These four TVs are solid choices when searching for a good screen, a few extras, and, most significantly, a good price.

TCL 32-Inch 720p Roku Smart LED TV
This is the perfect TV for anyone who’s simply looking for a decent-sized screen in a smaller room, like a guest bedroom or dorm. Its 32 inches is more than sufficient if you’re watching from only a few feet away. It’s actually not full HD, but it really won’t matter as much with a smaller screen.

With three HDMI ports, you won’t have any trouble should you use this TV for watching actual TV, playing video games on multiple consoles, and connecting your computer.

It also has a Roku built into the TV, so you don’t only have access to a ton of streaming services, you don’t have to purchase a separate set-top box or dongle to make your TV smart. At this price, it’s tough to argue with what you’re getting: a good sized screen, smart functionality, and a good number of inputs.

TCL 55-Inch 1080p Roku Smart LED TV
This is actually the last TV’s bigger sibling, and while it carries every one of the benefits of the smaller TCL set we’ve recommend, it has a few extras that make it worth a look. The first is that it is huge. We have a 60-inch TV in our home and we are constantly impressed by its size.

Second, it’s a full 1080P screen; at this size, the visible difference between 720p and 1080p is noticeable. This is actually the type of TV that you would like in your family room: It’s big, smart, and has exactly the same three HDMI port setup that ensures you’ll have enough inputs for all of your gadgets.

VIZIO 40-Inch 4k Ultra HD Smart LED TV
Vizio continues its reign on the list of kings of budget TV hardware even into the 4K era. It might not be the biggest TV on the market, however its price is really competitive, if you’re looking for a little future proofing in your living room.

The built-in smart apps aren’t as seamless as they would be running on a set-top box, however they are also pretty good. Built-in Wi-Fi means you can use these apps anytime, and the fact that it supports the wireless AC standard ensures that connection ought to be reliable. With five HDMI ports, you will not be hurting for places to connect your stuff, even if you are a power user.

We’ve also become a big fan of Vizio’s upscaling, which makes even 720p content look clear and without any major artifacting. You’ll probably still tell it’s HD content being upscaled, however, not so much that it’s going to bother you. This would be the perfect set for a master bedroom or smaller family room, where you’ll sit a reasonable distance away, but not across a giant room.

Vizio 43-Inch SmartCast 4K LED Smart TV and Home Theater Accessory Bundle
This is considered one of Vizio’s new E-series TVs, and it has a feature that sets it apart from every other TV out there. Rather than relying upon built-in apps so it will be smart, as well as a standard remote for navigation, each Vizio SmartCast TV may be controlled through any smartphone or tablet using Vizio’s SmartCast app.

The TV still comes with a standard remote for basic navigation, but depends on streaming content from a device you already have. As a loyal NETFLIX user, this will make a lot of sense. Why design brand new apps and their own touch remote for the TV instead of building in the functionality to acquire content from an outside device that you own and like?

This TV has four HDMI inputs instead of five, but that is to support an additional USB port, that can be used to play content directly. This is a “TV from the future.” Its focus is on delivering great picture and providing you with the ability to stream your content from your smart devices. It could take a little while to get accustomed to this way of doing things, but once you do, you will find there’s chance you might never wish to go back.

The bundle we are recommending comes with a power strip, cleaning kit, and two HDMI cables. Everything you’ll need to get going.
