How Tampa Bay stack up against the fastest-growing cities

June 24, 2016 by Nick & Cindy Davis

The entire population in 52 incorporated cities in the Tampa Bay area jumped 2 percent between July 1, 2014 and July 1, 2015. Most of the larger cities in the region, including Tampa and St. Petersburg, saw population growth generally between 1 % and a little over 3 percent, but one smaller community – Davenport in northeast Polk County – experienced a rate of growth approaching 10 percent, in accordance with new figures from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Fast-growing cities have a diverse talent pool that is certainly popular with companies that would like to expand their workforce, while also driving increased requirement for housing and retail sites.

Tampa, the biggest city in the area, was home to 369,075 people as of last July 1, 2015. That was a 2.5 percent increase from the same day the year before.

St. Petersburg’s population jumped 1.3 % to 257,083. Both Clearwater and Lakeland posted 1.7 percent gains in population.

View the chart below for populations and percentage increases in all 52 Tampa Bay cities list within the Census Bureau report.

Fort Myers was the fastest-growing Florida city with a population of more than 50,000, with a 4.4 % increase. Jacksonville had the largest numeric increase in residents, up 13,069 to 868,031.

Davenport, one of the smaller cities within the Tampa Bay area, having a population of 3,534, was up 9.5 percent, the most significant increase of any local city. Davenport is near Interstate 4 and US 27, one of the top-performing industrial real estate markets in the united states.
