Happy Arbor Day! Founded in 1872 by journalist J. Sterling Morton, Arbor Day recognizes the significance of trees in communities, and promotes tree cultivation and care. Spring is an ideal time to plant trees, giving roots a chance to dig in and spread out before being clobbered by summer’s heat and dry weather. Prior to going on a shopping spree at your local garden nursery, make sure to look into the right tree for you. Here are some basics.
3 Tree Suggestions for Arbor Day
1. Some trees have surface root systems that may bust through concrete. Hybrid poplars, Willows, American Elm and Silver Maples are the ones to watch out for. Discover what kind of root network the tree you’re looking at will grow and plant it an appropriate distance from decks, patios, driveways, foundations and septic systems.2. Have seasonal allergies? Be sure that your chosen tree is not a notorious pollen culprit. Maple can cause truly terrible allergy symptoms. Cottonwoods, Juniper and Birch trees are also allergy troublemakers.
3. Finally, be conscious of tree debris. Sweet gum trees can make your yard a minefield of spikey “gumballs” that may hurt people and pets’ feet. Cottonwoods can drape your house in problematic puffs. And the otherwise lovely catalpa tree can drop thousands of tiny worms.
