Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody’s office is warning consumers about a new phone scam that is attempting to trick people into giving up their Social Security numbers (SSN).

Moody’s office referred to it as “a new twist on an old scam,” since the robocall fraudsters use “spoofing,” which disguises their number shown on caller IDs. Instead, the call appears to come from the Social Security Administration (SSA). Respondents who believe their caller ID can then be duped into giving the caller their Social Security number.
The most recent ploy is a variation of a longstanding tactic wherein scammers tell you they are from the Internal Revenue Service.
“The Federal Trade Commission reports a rise in the number of SSA imposter scams while IRS imposter scam reports are on the decline,” a press release issued by Moody’s office Wednesday states.
The attorney general’s advice: Never provide personal information, including Social Security numbers or financial account numbers, as a result of a solicitation. Any caller who claims that a Social Security number is about to be suspended or bank accounts are going to be seized is lying.
“Scammers are utilizing technology and tricks to steal your Social Security number,” Moody said in the release. “Never provide your SSN as a result of a solicitation and never trust your caller ID. If you receive one of these calls, hang up the phone immediately and call my office at 1(866) 9NO-SCAM.”
