Happy Pride month! Ever since the 1970s, members of the LGBTQ community along with its allies have designated June as a time to celebrate diversity and raise understanding of the important issues still facing this community today. Honoring this month-long celebration, here’s four tips on how to build an inclusive culture in your local community.

1. Use inclusive language and terms Would you describe someone as “a person who relies on a wheelchair” or “a wheelchair-bound person?” Small shifts can create a huge difference. This guide from Emerson College is a fantastic reference to learn appropriate terms to use in small talk at the mailbox.
2. Don’t assume pronouns If you believe it’s appropriate, you may want to ask neighbors their preferred gender pronouns. The University of Milwaukee suggests: “Try asking: ‘What pronouns do you use?’ or ‘Can you remind me what pronouns you use?’ It can feel awkward in the beginning, however it is not half as awkward as making a hurtful assumption.” Needless to say you won’t always get it right, no one’s perfect! Making an effort is a sign you acknowledge and respect all people have a unique identity.
3. Be a host For anyone who is thinking about becoming acquainted with your neighbors on a personal level, see whether there is a meetup group designed for connecting LGBTQ in your local community, or start one of your own.If you should have the chance to be a dinner host, invite a family or people in the neighborhood to share a meal with you and exchange thoughts about life. In the end, nothing brings people together like good food!
4. Attend your area Pride event It’s a fantastic community event and great way to get connected to neighbors. Round everyone up and scout out a location along with parade route. Most festivals have family-friendly events – look into the local schedule to see what’s offered in your community.
