At all ages, a move can certainly be stressful. However for school-age kids,a significant move means a new school, transitioning to new curriculum and finding new friends. Here are some steps you can take to help ease the transition and encourage kids for a school transfer.

Acknowledge their anxiety.

Day one of school is certainly knee-knocking and nerve-racking. The first day at a new school can certainly be even scarier for kids. Make sure they know that their feelings are totally natural and understandable. Affirm their feelings, and then offer advice or personal anecdotes about times you’ve been nervous about an issue that turned-out O.K.

Go on a trial run.

Whenever the new school doesn’t host an official orientation for new students,attempt to request a tour for you and your child. Younger kids could be comforted by seeing their classroom and playground, and understanding the location of the bathroom and the bus port. Older kids may like to walk their first day’s schedule: from the bus, to the locker, to their different classrooms.

Meet the neighbors

Meeting your neighbors and parents at the new school is generally a great help for your kids. You can hear first-hand how families have navigated the school district, and in some cases arrange play dates or meet-ups between your kids and other students. Begin to make connections as a classroom volunteer, or mingling at the bus stop to talk with other parents.

Pack a special lunch.

In case your kids bring lunch, make it a special one packed with their favorite snacks as well as an encouraging note from you.
