Nest Labs, the Google-owned smart home company behind the Nest thermostat, is introducing an outside version of their popular indoor home security camera, allowing the security-and design-obsessed design to breathe a little easier.
Nest Security Camera Watches Your Home and Sends Text Alerts
The $199 outdoor camera is both weatherproof and battery-less, and unlike the typical motion-detecting camera, the Nest Cam knows when its looking at a person instead of your neighbor’s cat, due to special software being developed in tandem with Google. It can even send users a text altering them to the presence of a human. The device, which is attached to a magnetized disc, promises simple, straightforward installation.
It also records everything it hears and sees, storing 1080p HD video, footage in the cloud for as much as a month. The unit comes with a speaker and two-way microphone, so you’re able to tell burglars to scram or ask delivery people to just leave a package at the door.
In case you have doubts about the usefulness of having a 24/7 live feed of your front porch, the organization collected a slew of chilling Nest Cam footage showing how the indoor cam helped customers prevent home break-ins. It’s not really a huge leap to assume users prefer to be alerted about a burglar before the thief getting inside.
The Nest Cam Outdoor is currently available for pre-order and will be released this fall.
