Get Crafty With The Things Around You

February 2, 2016 by Nick & Cindy Davis

While on Pinterest I see a lot of creative creations, and I always think…”whoa, that person so crafty!”. Now I guess the world is going to see me as a tad bit crafty as well, but the truth is I am really not that crafty. This whole project was just a series of steps that happened one after the other. I will admit most of my ideas get this felt art reaction…

Get Crafty With The Things Around You

It started with an old washer that broke. I wanted to pull it apart to see what the guts looked like and to see if I could do anything with it. I had it in my head that I could make a desk out of it somehow (I really needed a home work-space). If your looking to save a little extra cash, getting crafty with the things around you may be exactly what you need to learn about. Plus, you’ll have fun along the way and have much more pride in your competed project!

Once I pulled off the frame I started to work with it placing it every which way and sitting in a chair with it to try and determine what would work best. I finally found a way that I was happy with, but then I began to really look at this metal shape, and it was kind of ugly.

The paint began to chip in places, and there were some marks and scratches, plus areas of rust. I decided that this piece would not be accepted in my house. So, I hopped in the car and bought $12 worth of spray paint and primer. By this point I was so excited I had to rush home and begin painting it.

It was thoughtfully pointed out to me that I should try to do a design of sorts. I agreed that this would increase the work-space aesthetically, but again…not so crafty. So, I did the simplest thing I could think of… stripes. (And it looked way better than I could have ever hoped for)

Once that was competed all that was left was filling in the spaces. I got some old stuff that I had from around the house, and some interesting left over washer parts. To make everything match I got some more spray paint (about $8), and my new home office came to life.

I  used some old mason jars (from a juice cleanse gone wrong) to hold pens, pencils, and markers. But they were cluttering the space, so I hung them on the wall.

I found some old laminated sheets from an Italian class I took and tied some ribbon around it to make hanging file folders, and used paper and the lids of the jars to label them.

As a side project to my project, I was also able to turn the drum of the washer into a fire pit!

This experience has reminded me of a few things. First, we should always remember that accomplishments lay at the end of a step-by-step process (and they require some elbow grease).  Second, we should learn to see the potential in the things that are around us. Finally, the great words of actress, comedian, voice artist, director, producer, and writer Amy Poehler:

So go forth into the world and see what you can create! Maybe it will turn out like the felt art, or maybe you will surprise yourself. Either way you’ve just learned something about yourself!
