Following on the heels of a massive recall of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones, U.S. regulators are now issuing an alert about Samsung’s washing machines. The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall of 2.8 million of Samsung’s washing machines.
Authorities Recall Samsung Washers
Authorities warn that the tops of the washers could possibly detach during use. In excess of 700 customers to date have reported such incidents, with nine of those reports resulting in injuries, including a broken jaw, the Consumer Product Safety Commission warns.
The recall includes 34 Samsung top-loading models from 2011 to most recent models. The recall does not affect Samsung washers sold outside of North America.
“Before you do another load of laundry, contact Samsung and respond to this recall,” warns CPSC Chairman Elliot Kaye. “These top loading washers present a risk of injury when used on a high-speed spin cycle … The best way to prevent injury is for everyone who might have a recalled washing machine to contact Samsung-immediately.”
The company already has faced some lawsuits alleging that the washing machines exploded when in use, dating back to 2013.
“Our priority is to reduce any safety risks in the home and to provide our customers with easy and simple choices in response to the recall,” says John Herrington, senior vice president and general manager of Home Appliances, Samsung Electronics America. “We are moving quickly and in partnership with the CPSC to ensure consumers know the options available to them and that any disruption in the home is minimized.”
In September, Samsung issued a global recall of 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 phones, after reports surfaced that the batteries may potentially explode. Soon after, replacement phones also were found to be at risk of catching fire, which led Samsung to stop manufacturing of the Note 7 entirely and issue refunds.
