4 Lawn Care Recommendations For a Lush Spring

April 23, 2018 by Nick & Cindy Davis

Longer days and blossoming flowers of spring indicate that it’s time to ready your lawn to spend more time outdoors. These lawn care tips can make certain that your lawn is lush and all set to go for the season and into the heat of summer.

4 Lawn Care Recommendations For a Lush Spring

4 Lawn Care Recommendations For a Lush Spring

1. Dethatch

Dethatch to rid your lawn of dying or dead grass. Lawns be successful with under a ½ inch of thatch, but will start to suffocate when there’s an excessive amount of. A sturdy rake is normally all you need to perform the job, but if you have a large yard or possibly a lot debris (in excess of 1 inch of thatch), consider using a power rake. Dethatching is often rough on your lawn so ensure that you do it in early spring to enable the grass to recover properly.

2. Pay attention to Bare Patches

Winters can be hard on lawns, and grass seeds don’t always survive the winter season. If you notice thin or bare spots that were created by winter storms, you’ll want to replant. Simply loosen up the soil with a rake and sprinkle grass seed to the area affected. Ensure that you water the area regularly to ensure that the seedlings take to the ground. Also, be certain to clear your lawn of any winter debris or fallen limbs that could hinder grass growth.

3. Mow Early

It’s time to bust out the mower. Just don’t wait a long time. Letting the grass grow too long can lead to stress and potentially damage the grass seed. At the same time, you must not cut the grass too short; grass seed does best any time a mow takes no more than 1/3 of the total grass height off. If you aren’t sure what height to mow at, consider performing a first mow at a higher cut level to get a good feel for what length your lawn would do best at. Look into the suggested mowing heights for the grass seed in your lawn since they differ.

4. Aerate In Late Spring

Grass grows better in soil that’s not compacted down. Aerating your lawn loosens up the dirt and offers air and room for necessary nutrients to deeply penetrate the soil. There are numerous tools on the market to make it easier to aerate, the most favored one is the gas-powered aeration tool that leaves small tubes of soil all around the lawn. For smaller lawns, you could use manual push aerators or possibly aeration shoes that attach to your footwear. If you decide to aerate, you’ll want to do so in late spring so that your lawn can heal prior to the arrival of summer.

Several of these measures, like aeration and dethatching require a bit of effort, however they are definitely worth it in developing a lush, green lawn. Spring is the ideal time to ready your lawn for a vibrant growing season. With a little bit of additional care this time of year your lush lawn is going to be ready for outdoor living.
